Whistle While You Work9/5/2017 Week 3, quite possibly the busiest week that we have had thus far in the ISM program. This week the ISM students were responsible for creating their original interview questions, conduct a research assessment regarding our career of choir, and creating a contact log with potential individuals we could reach out to with the intentions of learning more about our careers.
Through all this work, I found myself in a bit of a reality check situation. As I have said in my previously weekly updates, making the decision to study music this year in ISM was very outside of my comfort zone. However, this week truly put all of that nervousness into perspective. Exploring more into music has always been something that I wanted to do, but was either too nervous or did not have the time to do so (being a high school student, and all…) Taking the jump to study this topic in ISM puts all of those excuses aside. I found that once I began conducting research, especially when creating my contact log, I was beyond excited. All the nervousness was pushed aside and I was able to confidently believe that I am ready to pursue this year head-on and work towards improving my knowledge and experience in this field. In addition to facing a reality check, I was reminded of what a great opportunity the ISM program is. What many people do not understand is that this program allows students to explore a topic of study that THEY want to. As I stated before, this week consisted of a large amount of assignments. However, I found none of these assignments to feel like “busy work”. I found myself pushing to finish all of my other school work, so I could focus on the work that I wanted to accomplish through ISM. I am excited to see what the next couple of weeks hold. I know that we will begin cold calling and going to interviews very shortly, as well as searching for the single individual who will become our mentors for the year. I am beyond ready to begin, and can not wait to see what I will be able to accomplish this year.
